Adoption
Statistics
Once
you've made the decision to adopt you may begin to see adoptive
families everywhere, but in fact, adoptive families are very special.
There were almost 49,000 children adopted in 2005 (26,325 domestically
and 22,562 internationally).

Adoption Statistics |
- Estimated
Cost: $10,000 to $40,000
- Profile
of Children
Despite myths to the contrary, domestic newborn adoption remains
alive and well in the United States. Although the number of infants
placed for adoption in the United States has declined since the
1970s, reflecting a waning stigma of unwed parenthood and rising
use of contraception, current estimates of the annual number of
infants adopted domestically (excluding foster and relative adoption)
range from 25,000 to 30,000-more than adopted from all international
countries combined.
In the
majority of U.S. newborn adoptions, adoptive parents are selected
by the birthparents of the child they adopt, and in at least half
of the cases, the birthparents and adoptive parents have met.
While ongoing contact is increasingly common, the extent of that
contact varies significantly. Birthparents generally fall into
one of three categories: young, single mothers; married couples
with financial problems; and teenagers.
Depending
on the situation, the laws in the state where the family lives
and the laws in the state where the baby is born, prospective
adoptive parents may pay some of the living and medical expenses
of the birthmother..
- Parent
Ages
There are no legal restrictions in most states, but many or most
birth families select the family for their child, so parents who
are younger than 25 or older than 45 may wait longer to be selected.
- Family
Status
No regulation, but birthparents may be looking for a couple rather
than a single parent, and a family with few or no other children.
- Travel
The adoptive family must satisfy the laws of the state where the
baby is born before they can bring the child to a different state.
Depending on the state, this may take just a day or two or several
weeks.

Every country has requirements that prospective adoptive parents
must meet, usually regarding age, income, number of existing children
in the home, some indicator of marital stability (number of divorces,
years married) and, in the case of single applicants, gender.

The adoptive family must satisfy the laws of the country where
the baby is born before they can bring the child to their home
in the United States.
